free limewire lime wire

LimeWire is a free and open source peer-to-peer file sharing client for the Gnutella network. It is released under the GNU General Public License. The program allows users to share files using the Gnutella peer-to-peer protocol. It was the first file sharing program to support firewall-to-firewall file transfers, a feature introduced in version 4.2, which was released in November 2004.

LimeWire is written in Java and therefore runs on any computer with the Java virtual machine installed. To facilitate installation for casual users, the developers release installation packages for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and for Linux, in RPM format. Classic Mac OS (Mac OS 9 and before) support has been dropped with LimeWire 4.0.10.

LimeWire uses the SHA-1 and Tiger tree hash cryptographically secure hash functions to ensure that downloaded data is uncompromised. Although researchers have identified possible vulnerabilities in the SHA1 algorithm, because LimeWire does not rely on SHA1 alone, these vulnerabilities do not have many adverse implications for LimeWire’s verification of downloaded files.

The Windows version of LimeWire installer includes a stripped-down version of Sun’s Java installer which will download and install version 1.5 of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) if it detects the machine doesn’t have Java, or has a version of Java below version 1.4.1.

Lime Wire LLC, the developer of LimeWire, distributes two versions of the program; a basic, free version, and an enhanced version sold for a small fee, which the developers claim [1] offers faster downloads. Prior to April 2004, the free version of LimeWire was distributed with a bundled program called “LimeShop” (a variant of TopMoxie), which was considered by computer security experts to be spyware. Among other things, LimeShop monitored online purchases in order to redirect sales commissions to LimeWire LLC. Uninstallation of LimeWire would not remove LimeShop. With the removal of all bundled software in LimeWire 4.0 (released May 14, 2004), these objections were addressed.

Being open source, LimeWire has spawned several forks, including LionShare, an experimental software development project at Penn State University, FrostWire, and Acquisition, a popular Macintosh-based Gnutella client with a proprietary interface. Researchers at Cornell University developed a reputation management add-in called Credence that allows users to distinguish between “genuine” and “suspect” files before downloading them.

According to a 28 June 2005 report in The New York Times, LimeWire LLC may stop distributing LimeWire due to the outcome of MGM v. Grokster. However, new versions are being released (4.10 released on March 18) with smarter search results, optimized downloads and other features. On September 25, it was reported that Lime Wire LLC was working on a version of the program which will refuse to share files that lack valid license information.

An October 12, 2005 report states that some of the LimeWire open source contributors have forked the project and called it FrostWire. The FrostWire project has a beta release, which is claimed to be equivalent in power to the nonfree version of Limewire. The FrostWire developers emphasize that they will never place any sharing-related restrictions on the client.

Connection Problems with Limewire

The most common problem with Limewire is Limewire not connecting to the Limewire network. For those who are having trouble connection to the Gnutella network using LimeWire, we have a potential fix. You need to delete your WHOLE LimeWire preferences directory. The directory can be found in the following locations:

OS X:
/Users/your_username/Library/Preferences/LimeWire

Windows:
C:/Documents And Settings/your_username/.limewire

Linux:
~/.limewire

Please shutdown any instance of LimeWire you may have running, delete the whole directory, and then restart LimeWire. You should be able to connect. Should you not be able to connect to the Limewire network. Ask the question in the Free Limewire forum.

Finding your Limewire Preferences Folder called .limewire

For LimeWire 4.10 or later: Delete the LW Preferences folder called limewire (whilst LW is closed!) found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\*yourusername*\Application Data\limewire

Note: The Application Data folder is HIDDEN. In order to find & access it, you’ll need to turn on the show hidden files & folders option. See sample below. New users of LW will find their preferences here. For those who have updated from an earlier version to 4.10 or later, you will find your preferences here after having deleted your preferences in the previous location discussed in Step 2 in the post at top of page!

Steps:
(a) Bring up search engine. (b) Change visible items to show Hidden files & folders under Tools>Options>View. (c) Search limewire. (d) Select the result & be sure it’s located at \Application Data\limewire & then delete it.

Fixes for Limewire when LimeWire isn’t operating

Here’s some points for helping to fix LimeWire if it’s not working properly. Close LimeWire before you try these things.

Try these things one by one until one works:

1. Update your Java version 1.5 (take the JRE) using the “Offline” version or for some people 1.4.2 HERE (Choose the JRE) seems to behave better in certain circumstances. Download the Java installer to your computer before installing by choosing the “Offlne” version. Don’t install it over the net.

Configuring Limewire for optimal performance

First, make sure to know exactly what connection speeds you have, both upload and download. This may sound dumb but there are people who don’t know (or maybe can’t remember) what connection they are paying for. As a proof, many write in posts things like: “I have cable” or “I have a DSL connection”.
While that’s all good, you must know that there are different kinds of speeds, so knowing what connection speed you’re on is more important (in this particular case at least).
Also, consider that DSL and Cable connection speeds are affected by the physical distance from the server, so if you have like a thousand kilobit connection but the server is, like, a zillion kilometers away (I obviously like exageration, huh?), then your speeds would still be incredibly slow.

AllofMP3.com under attack

The website, run by MediaServices Inc., has long protested its innocence. Yet the prices are remarkable: a British shopper can download an album from iTunes Music Store for £9.79; or typically about £0.75 from AllofMP3, which prices its downloads by file size. And the choice is enormous. All those Beatles albums that Apple is not allowed to sell can be found at AllofMP3.com for under a pound.

New XP “Patch” Checks License, Reports IP To Redmond

What exactly happens in the event that the tool finds a PC that is suspected of running a counterfeit version of Windows (what info, if any, is then shared with Redmond)?:

“WGA Notifications is for Windows XP users. Our client software does not collect any information that can be used to identify or contact a user. We use the same process used by many popular search engines and Web sites to determine where their users are from — a form of IP lookup. This IP lookup process does not include any information that is used to identify you or contact you, and only gives a rough geographic representation of where users are located.”

Gonzales pressures ISPs on data retention

During Friday’s meeting, Justice Department officials passed around pixellated (that is, slightly obscured) photographs of child pornography to emphasize the lurid nature of the crimes police are trying to prevent, according to one source.

A Justice Department spokesman familiar with the administration’s stand on data retention was in meetings on Friday and unavailable for comment, a department representative said.

Ebay auction selling gone wrong

It’s a simple enough prospect when you have a second-hand silver Ford Galaxy Ghia automatic you want to offload, so where better to get rid of it than on eBay? Well Ebay was a great idea until the emails started! Here’s the plan - set up auction, post nice pictures, include full details and wait for the bids to roll in.

Or rather, wait for the emails to roll in. Hundreds of ‘em, as every muppet and wag in the land jumps on the “bait the vendor” bandwagon.

Reading this on Ebay kept me in stitches !!!

THE norteño songs of Conjunto Agua Azul, complete with the musical genre’s trademark accordion sounds, emit from the Heights-area office of Eberardo Compean, vice president of promotions and sales for Houston-based Ace Records.

While the mainstream music industry has to worry about slumping sales and illegal downloading of its music, Hispanic music producers like Compean are riding a wave of popularity in the U.S.

File-Sharing Trickster to Pay For Scam

A man who duped customers into believing they could download copyrighted MP3 files without violating the law has agreed to settle Federal Trade Commission (FTC) charges that his claims were false.

Cashier Myricks, Jr., operator of mp3downloadcity.com, agreed to pay $15,240 to the 611 customers who signed up to use the service to exchange music, movie and game files.

The FTC said in a statement that Myricks is also barred from misrepresentations about P2P (define) file-sharing products or services and must explain the civil and criminal liability risks of downloading copyrighted material without the owner’s permission.

µTorrent Spyware/Adware Claims Refuted

The honeymoon came to a screeching halt on February 28, 2006, when PeerFactor and µTorrent announced a six month deal to distribute authorized content online. This drew the ire of the µTorrent community, who remember the days when PeerFactor was affiliated with French anti-piracy company RetSpan. The two companies separated in late 2005 however, and the newly formed PeerFactor SARL are now working on P2P distribution software rather than anti-piracy technology, (although their website is still linked from the RetSpan homepage.)
