Microsoft stops the Vista Torrent

Vistatorrent.com received the well known “cease and desist” letter from Microsoft. They had been instructed to remove the bittorrent from their wesbites which they had been seeding. This they did because people had complained that they had ben unable to download a copy of the Microsoft Vista Beta. Who knows if the “cease and desist” notice was ever real?

Our cooperation in this matter is a given; the tracker is dead. We were only trying to help Microsoft by doing this, assuming the costs and responsibilities associated with serving and seeding larger files. We did not alter, crack, hack, or patch any of Microsoft’s files - merely provided a mirror for them when Microsoft was worried that “people might have problems with World Cup viewing, etc.” due to the high demand of Windows Vista Beta 2. If the reprinting of your “Cease and Desist Letter” also infringes on Microsoft’s copyright, we will remove it as well.

RIAA chief says illegal song-sharing ‘contained’

Nearly a year after the Supreme Court issued a landmark ruling against online music file-sharing services, the CEO of the Recording Industry Association of America says unauthorized song swapping has been “contained.”

“The problem has not been eliminated,” says association CEO Mitch Bainwol. “But we believe digital downloads have emerged into a growing, thriving business, and file-trading is flat.”

That’s an optimistic view from an industry that saw its numbers slide to near oblivion after the launch of the original Napster in 1999. CD sales fell as much as 30%, and the RIAA pressed Congress and the courts for relief against what it said was rampant piracy.

The Pirate Bay is back in Sweden

One day after The Pirate Bay was forced offline, the BitTorrent tracker declared it would return within two days. This promise was kept, as on June 3, 2006, The Pirate Bay was again online and functioning in the Netherlands. Although its tracking and indexing ability was spotty, it was a public relations triumph over the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) and perhaps even more so, Antipiratbyrån (Swedish Anti-piracy Bureau.)

Daddy Yankee defends music piracy in Peru

Music piracy is unstoppable, and justified for poor fans, Puerto Rican reggaeton sensation Daddy Yankee said Saturday in the Peruvian capital of Lima.

Daddy Yankee spoke before a one-night appearance to promote his “Barrio Fino en Directo” album, which features live and remixed versions of 2004 hits like “Gasolina” and “Lo Que Paso Paso.”

“You can’t control (piracy). They gonna keep on doing it,” said the Latin Grammy-winning Yankee, who was born Raymond Ayala.

Pirate Bay’s traffic 300% but its a flash in the pan!

For those of you who have been living in a cave, this might be news to you. The Pirate Bay, one of the world’s most popular websites for illegal downloading of movies, has increased its traffic by more than 300% after Swedish police shut down the site for three days. They are back up and running, but for how long, that remains the question.

Having all this traffic is however nothing more than a flash in the pan if we look at the graph attached from Alexa. Looking at the stats, we note with interest that the traffic is running back down to where it was before the raid. The average “Page Views per user” is coming back down as well as its reach.

P2P built into Microsoft Vista

Everyone’s been in a meeting like this at one time or another: the group is sitting around, pounding out thoughts both verbally and on their laptops. All of a sudden, boom, someone comes up with a great idea which is expressed in a certain file, say a .vsd (Visio) file. Each person needs a copy of it, which means each person busts out a thumb drive that needs to be passed around the room to each PC. Wouldn’t it be nice if everyone had the same software installed that could share the file on demand? Now I know what you’re saying, “There’s already software out there to do that,” but Microsoft felt that it would be much easier to coordinate if that software were built right into the operating system. Thus, the company is including an upgrade to the Windows Collaboration tool, called Windows MeetingSpace, in Windows Vista. Windows MeetingSpace is a type of peer-to-peer software that is used by Wi-Fi users for file sharing, and it leverages the company’s “People Near Me” technology.

Korea stops music file-sharing

Korean file sharing services have banded together and agreed to block p2p downloading of music files. From last Friday a majority of p2p services said that they would intercept files, in a country where the value of CD sales has fallen by 70 per cent in five years.

‘We held an urgent meeting last week, and eight of 11 member companies agreed to block MP3 files until we find ways to charge users,’ said spokesman Jun Hyun-sung.

Koreans had paid around 50 won, less than 3p, to download an entire album, with none of the money passing to copyright holders.

The Korean Association of Phonogram Producers (KAPP), which represents the music industry, had threatened legal action unless the p2p companies took action by 12 June, today.

File sharing in Germany

Last month, the homes of 130 German filesharers were raided. User data were gained through the operation of an eDonkey server, which took place at least in February 2006. Details weren’t given, but some information came from attorney Christian Solmecke, who was defending seven accused filesharers, one of them being a user of the Gnutella-client Bearshare.
One of the most interesting statements after the raid was made by state attorney Jürgen Krautkreme, who said eDonkey-Servers are legal in Germany. As Heise reported, law enforcers surveilled an eDonkey server, collecting information on users. About 100 computers were confiscated, but not the eDonkey-Server itself.

Worm hits Yahoo! Mail users

Yahoo! is the world’s largest email services provider and handles 200 million accounts, but it said on Monday that only “a very small fraction” had been infected.

The worm has been dubbed Yamanner and landed in Yahoo! mailboxes bearing the subject line “New Graphic Site”. Once opened, the message infects the computer and spreads to other users listed in Yahoo! users’ email address books, security companies said.

The email containing the virus need only be opened - in contrast to most worms that are hidden in attachments and require users to take an additional step - to release the virus, according to computer security company Symantec.

The Pirate Bay Back Online

On May 31, 2006, BitTorrent as many people know it came to a grinding halt. The Swedish National Criminal Police raided Rex|Port80, the home of The Pirate Bay and at least 200 other domains. The raid disrupted The Pirate Bay, throwing much of the BitTorrent community into chaos.

However, this bewilderment would prove temporary as The Pirate Bay is once again online. True to its defiant nature, The Pirate Bay is again indexing many of the same .torrent files that made it wildly popular.

News of The Pirate Bay’s resurrection comes as little surprise. The Pirate Bay spokesperson “brokep” promised Slyck.com the site would resolve under a different country’s flag if an immediate resolution could not be reached in Sweden.

Patching WinMX

The battle against “false files” or flooding P2P networks with bogus material is a long and attritionous fight. In fact, it’s been fought with such ferocity that people are willing to protect long abandoned networks such as WinMX. In addition to no longer being developed and its population reduced, WinMX diehards continue to inflate the value of this P2P relic.

WinMX’s day came to a screeching halt soon after the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) delivered ‘cease and desist’ letters to several leading commercial P2P developers in September of 2005. As a recipient of one of these letters, Frontcode Technologies, the talent behind WinMX, decided to abandon the project.

At Least Four Top Sites Busted

According to an internal scene notice, the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) has confiscated dozens of servers belonging to at least four top sites. The release groups FLAMES, DiAMOND, SAGA and HAFVCD, hosted by Layered Technologies in Frisco Texas, are reportedly offline. Several other affiliate sites, hosted by Server Matrix, were also taken down.

According to the scene notice, FBI agents entered Layered Technologies at 9 AM. At that point, the servers were already offline and awaiting FBI confiscation. Simultaneously, the scene notice states FBI agents entered Server Matrix’s facility and confiscated 18-20 servers from yet unnamed top sites.
