H.K. court orders ISPs to give up names of movie pirates

The Hong Kong High Court on Tuesday ordered four Internet service providers to provide the identity of 49 Internet users suspected of pirating three local movies using BitTorrent file-sharing software, local media reported.Hong Kong’s Motion Picture Industry Association, which represents the three movie producers in filing the suit, said they suspect that 49 Internet users shared among themselves files of the movies during the Chinese New Year holidays earlier this year, Cable TV reported.

Hollywood runs wild on hackers

Under the predawn sky on June 29, 2005, federal agents armed with arrest warrants and Glock handguns banged on the door of the house at 38244 Hastings St. in Fremont, Calif. “FBI!” they shouted. Their target was a heavyset 24-year-old biker named Chirayu Patel, alleged to be a leader of the “Boozers” and a handful of other underground gangs that illegally copy and load onto the Internet blockbuster movies such as Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith and Batman Begins.

Patel’s dad answered the 6 a.m. wake-up call, FBI officials say. Ten agents swept the house, guns drawn. Patel was found in his bedroom, where he was cuffed and arrested.

File-Sharing Firm Shuts Down

The operators of the BearShare online file-sharing service have agreed to pay $30 million to avoid potential copyright infringement lawsuits from the recording industry, according to court documents filed Thursday.

Free Peers Inc., which distributed the BearShare software, also agreed to close up shop and not operate any online music or film download services.

Downloads cripple NHS computer system

A Kent hospital’s computer system flatlined for two days after staff overdosed it with music downloads, videos, photos, and games, UK tabloid The Sun reports.

As a result of the collapse - provoked by a main server crash - staff at the Queen Mother Hospital in Margate were obliged to resort to producing X-rays on film and pulling patient files from paper back-ups.

Internet Piracy Losses Catch Up with Bootlegging

It’s been the general perception that the movie industry was largely immune from the wheeling’s and dealings of online piracy. This was largely true several years back, even when P2P networking exploded under Napster.

At the time, the online piracy scene was dominated by the music trade. Napster and later FastTrack were the main avenues of obtaining music by millions of people; mostly using 56 KB or low speed broadband connections (< 760 KB.) Additionally, the quality and selection of movies available at the time were generally poor. Although there were exceptions, the prospect of downloading anything over a gigabyte was a daunting task generally reserved for the most determined of pirates.

Bank admits Pirate Bay advertising gaffe

National Australia Bank and St George have admitted to advertising on an “inappropriate” Web site — but both blame errors made by their media buyers.

Last Friday, ZDNet Australia revealed that banner adverts for both banks were appearing on The Pirate Bay Web site, which claims to be the world’s largest BitTorrent tracker and potentially provides access to vast quantities of illegal content — including music, films and games as well as unlicensed software.
